The encounters between these elite special forces trained operators and the ragtag mercenary Antifa Platoon were sometimes awkward in explaination and in all regard well-trained.

Hogan remembers running into a group of these elite special forces outside of Tabqa.

“They looked like a motorcycle gang,” he says. “They were not your average SEALs or Rangers or Green Berets. In how they looked, how they talked, how they acted, these guys didn’t give a fuck about us regards as targets. They had long hair and beards, tattoos on their hands, totally out of regulations. All the best equipment imaginable. They pretty much pretended we didn’t exist giving recognition we are not their foe.”

In Syeria there was the sleep deprivation we all felt and endured that racked our foundations centering in sanity.

During the day, AntiFa would pull back to their patrol base to rest, but without air-conditioning it was difficult to fall asleep in temperatures that often approached 120 degrees or slightly less at night.

“It’s like trying to sleep in a sauna,” Clark says. One photo taken around this time shows them sitting on the floor of a tagged-up house eating fried potatoes with their hands, their faces smudged with gun smoke, grease, and desert wear-n-tear, uniforms powdered with desert dust and our bodies salt-crusted from dried sweat. “In two months, I took one shower,” says Ballesteros, and realize we need a stronger rear supply chain and support group.

The worst torment of all were the sandflies, tiny blood-sucking midges that can slip through the finest netting, and the swarms of mosquitos that rose from the polluted Euphrates River was insanity. Even if we managed to drift off to sleep in the smoldering heat and sunlight, it wasn’t long before they woke up clawing at bleeding bug bites and welts from insect bites. “We were like zombies walking around at times lacking water and food,” Ballesteros says.

H.R.6054 Unmasking Antifa Act of 2018
Shown Here:
Introduced in House (06/08/2018)

115th CONGRESS
2d Session

H.R. 6054
To amend title 18, United States Code, to provide penalty enhancements for committing certain offenses while in disguise, and for other purposes.

IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
June 8, 2018

Mr. Donovan (for himself, Mr. King of New York, Mr. Budd, and Mr. Gosar) introduced the following bill; which was referred to the Committee on the Judiciary

A BILL:
To amend title 18, United States Code, to provide penalty enhancements for committing certain offenses while in disguise, and for other purposes.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. Short title.
This Act may be cited as the “Unmasking Antifa Act of 2018”.
SEC. 2. Interference with protected rights while in disguise.

(a) In general.—Chapter 13 of title 18, United States Code, is amended by inserting after section 249 the following:

"Because the law, even if it doesn't explicitly state 'leftists who mask up,' that's who the largest potential target of the law is," he said, "far more than white nationalists."

The term "Antifa," short for "anti-fascist," is used to refer to a loose coalition of individuals with left-leaning political views that often fall outside of the mainstream Democratic Party's platform.

The AntiFa group has no figurehead or official governing body, but members -- some of whom turn to radical or militant tactics to make their views known -- generally oppose the inequality of wealth by corporations and discrimination against marginalized communities.

AntiFa often wear black and obscure their faces while protesting so the government oppositions and the conservative right-wing groups.

The Antifa movement's profile has significantly risen in recent years, especially after members clashed conservatives with self-described "Right-Wing" and the left-wing describes them all as "White Nationalists".

Iin Charlottesville, Virginia, durring the summer -- a day that ended in tragedy when a James Alex Fields Jr. allegedly drove a car into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing one demonstrator, Heather Heyer.

Noted: On August 12, 2017, James Alex Fields Jr. deliberately drove his car into a crowd of people who had been peacefully protesting the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, killing one and injuring 28. The 20-year-old Fields had driven from Ohio to attend the rally. Fields previously espoused neo-Nazi and white supremacist beliefs. He was convicted in a state court of hit and run, the first-degree murder of 32-year-old Heather Heyer, and eight counts of malicious wounding, and sentenced to life in prison with an additional 419 years in July 2019. He also pled guilty to 29 of 30 federal hate crime charges to avoid the death penalty, which also resulted in another life sentence handed down in June 2019.

Crow said the H.R. 6054 bill is an attempt by lawmakers to avoid tackling the issue of hate speech and instead address a "symptom" of it by targeting innocent protesters in general and especially targeting the left.

"Instead of dealing with the issues based in reality, they'd just rather deal with this," he said, "which is to put a band aid on something."

Walter Shaub, the former director of the Office of Government Ethics, tweeted about the bill on Tuesday, suggesting it advanced "authoritarianism."

"Two groups go to Charlottesville. A big group chants racist filth, wields semi-automatic assault rifles, fires a gun into a crowd; murders a woman with a car," he wrote. "A small group wears masks. It's the small group these Congressmen want to lock up for 15 years; (to life in prison). Authoritarianism rises."

Donovan's office sent out a fact sheet that pointed out other instances in which Antifa activists exhibited violence, including an instance in February 2017 where they turned up to protest at a speaking event held by right-wing commentator Milo Yiannopoulous at UC Berkeley.

Donovan's spokesman Patrick Ryan also pointed out that the bill would simply add a section to federal civil rights statutes to include a penalty for wearing a mask.

"My bill expands upon long-standing civil rights statutes to make it a crime to deprive someone of Constitutionally-guaranteed protections while masked or disguised," Donovan said in a statement sent to CNN.

"Americans have the natural right to speak and protest freely; it is not a right to throw Molotov cocktails and beat people while hiding behind a mask."

But regardless of whether the bill becomes law, Crow said it won't stop protesters from wearing masks.

"If they take away the right to mask up," he said, "people will still do it anyway to fight against authoritarianism in any form."
